| THE DIXIE DIARIST |
| HOW YOU CAN HELP PROMOTE SOUTHRON PEOPLE, HISTORY, HERITAGE AND CULTURE |
An Open Letter to Southron People and Their Allies:
Southron culture, history, heritage and most of all Southron people have been under attack since the earliest days of our country's existance. It came to a head in the War Between the States and the Reconstruction period that followed. The attacks are personal. Anyone who thinks that we can separate our personal lives from the culture we hold so dear is not familiar with Dixie and those who love her! Our ancestors'and our honored dead's honor and reputations are being attacked, defamed and libeled on a daily basis. We are accused of wonton racism at every turn. We are told we are hate-mongers for our love of a flag and what that flag represents: Freedom and Liberty; the unalienable right to self-government among the free nations of the world. But none of this is new to you, most likely.
But what can so few do against so many? What is it that keeps the few noteables in the Southron movement fighting against a seemingly insurmountable current of multiculturalism and anti-Southron bigotry? How can we win this culture war for ourselves and our children and grand-children? Is it time to just give up and throw in the towel? Do we just let the advocates of the "New South," coax us into compromise? Do we let bleeding heart liberals run us over? The questions never end. No one seems to have THE answer.
That's because there is no one answer. None of us have all the answers. There are many ways to win our battle with the Reconstuctionists who hate us. Here are a few examples of ways to make a stand:
1) Patronize Southron's businesses. Do you know someone who owns a business and flies the Stars and Bars or the Battle Flag out front? How about good Southron patriot who makes no effort to hide his love of Dixie? Spend money at that business when they sell something you need or provide a service you want. Pay a few dollars more for the quality and pride that go into a small business.
2) Send a message to those who hate the South: "I won't do business with you if I have a choice!" A great example of this is the boycot many Southrons have made against Coca-Cola. The anti-Confederate attitude of a company founded by a Confederate veteran is a true shame. For the last few years the North American market for Coca-Cola has been flat because true Southron patriots have held to their convictions and made a firm determination to do so for the long haul.
3) Buy clothing that is made in the South. Get your tee-shirts from places like Dixie Outfitters and other Southron-proud businesses. I replaced my winter coat with a shell jacket for lighter weather and a great coat for really cold weather. I have a kepi and a slouch hat that I wear whenever I go out. I use a CSA belt plate and belt to hold up my jeans. My favorite casual footwear is a pair of stovepipe cavalry boots. People see me and they know where I stand. I get very few dirty looks whatever. It has opened many doors to tell the Southron side of why the war was fought and what we stand for today.
4) Fly the flag! Be proud of your heritage and culture. I have decorated my living room with a collection of ante-bellum flags. I have battle flags, the Third National, a couple State flags and one that's just for fun. If you have a flag pole, put your flag on it and you'll be suprised at how many smiles it'll generate as people drive by.
5) Are you flambouyant? Put a bunch of bumberstickers on your car. My van has 14 Southron themed bumperstickers on it. Some are humorous, but most are a little more serious. I love to sit at stop lights and watch the eyes of the people in the cars and trucks behind me. You can usually tell when you've just given a person food for thought. It doesn't take a whole bill board of them. One or two carefully chosen stickers can do the trick.
6) Continually educate yourself about the history, heritage and culture of the Old South. Be able to carry an intelligent conversation and be able to demonstrate (peaceably, of course) where misconceptions about the South are wrong or where the textbooks lie.
7) Visit the educational opportunities, the re-enactments, the memorials and other cultural opportunities near your home. Visit the cemetaries with Confederate graves and do a little weeding or plant a battle flag on the grave.
8) Share. Share your heritage and culture with your neighbors. Show them the truth. Make sure they understand that we're not frustrated hate-mongers who "cling to guns and religion." Share with them in their time of need. It doesn't take thousands of dollars. A buck or two helps. A lot of little helps add up. Take a few cans of food to a hungry family, offer condolences to a grieving widow, buy some lemonade from the stand of the kid across the street. People will get their best impression of the Southron Movement from people they know who are in it.
9) Last, but most importantly: inculcate this love of Southron ways into your children and grand-children. They will carry it on after you and after you're gone. We can't let the torch of freedom die from negligence. If we don't they won't either. They will follow if we will lead.
These nine ideas are just a few things that might be done. Come up with your own and use them or make these yours and put them to good use if they work for you. Only when the scalawags and carpetbaggers begin to see us as a coherent community will they begin to realize that we're not a bunch of kooks in the hills. They will probably never like us, so don't try for that one (but be thankful if you win a friendship or two), but we can draw a line in the sand and make it known that we're serious and a force to be contended with.
